Typical Class StructureA typical day in my class starts with stretching exercises and Jumping Jacks or similar calisthenics to warm-up the body and help in the prevention of injuries. During this time I make announcements and explain the lesson for the day. Next , we go on a heart enhancing aerobic activity like a smart run which was developed by various experts in the area of physical fitness over 20 years ago to meet the needs of all people as an alternative to race/athletic running. Basically, a "smart run" is a run where you go "fast enough so that you're not walking, but slow enough so that you can keep talking." At this pace, which is at the lower range of one's target heart rate zone, fat is the primary fuel used as opposed to sugar. The smart run and all of our aerobic activities use time and not distance to meet the desired objective. Many properly placed activities can be used instead of a smart run. We will also use Tabata's, a specific High Intensity Interval Training regimen. The goal for the end of the year is to be able to have our students demonstrate a 12 minutes of "Smart Activity" The best thing about these smart activities is that they allow everyone to work at their own ability level thus insuring a safe and healthy way to exercise that enhances one's self-esteem because the only person you are competing with is yourself. Obviously I think very highly of the smart activities, whether they are running, walking, or using another smart style of exercise. The final phase of my class is the sport/activity part where the goal is to expose our students to a variety of different sports and activities so that they can confidently be a part of recreational and/or serious athletic events. This will only be done if the pandemic allows. Assignments The daily assignment is very simple. Try your best and behave yourself. Let the program work for you! |
